MAS Architettura reveals the refinement of the past in a modern Roman apartment.

In an elegant historic building on Via Tevere in Rome, MAS Architettura has expertly renovated a prestigious apartment, originally built in the early 1900s and famous for being the birthplace of the illustrious astronaut Michael Collins. This refurbishment project is distinguished by its ability to harmonise respect for history with the introduction of modern and functional innovations.

The project has carefully preserved the exquisite finishes and the strong identity of the original layout, enriching the environment with a palette of refined colours and noble materials. The marble portals, the flooring in decorated terrazzo and the herringbone parquet have been restored to become the undisputed protagonists of the interiors.

The tailor-made furnishings, both fixed and movable, have been created drawing inspiration from the existing decorative elements, such as the boiseries, brass details, and decorations found in the original structure.

Among the furniture, some iconic pieces from the MAS Design brand stand out, resulting from the innovative vision of Maria Adele Savioli, who transforms mini-architectures into everyday furnishing elements: Paolo sideboard, characterised by a frame in painted iron sheet, a body in matt lacquered MDF and brass finishes; and Marta wardrobe, with its structure in matt lacquered MDF, sliding doors covered in Arte wallpaper and brass details. These artisanal pieces, meticulously detailed, embody the ideal balance between aesthetics and functionality, custom-designed to meet the specific needs of the owners.

The kitchen, designed to follow the curvature of the walls, presents itself as a low element that integrates with the cabinetry framing the entrance to the room. Characterised by Calacatta gold marble surfaces, this space harmonises with the interiors, with its golden tones reflecting the brass details, conferring a sense of continuity and elegance to the environment.

The choice of colours has been equally meticulous, with ochre dominating the bathroom spaces, enriched with yellow onyx sinks and finishes that create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, reflecting the timeless elegance of the historical period in which the apartment was conceived.

With this intervention, the studio of Maria Adele Savioli has not only preserved the historic spirit of the residence but has also introduced elements of contemporary design, demonstrating an excellent balance between preservation and innovation. The apartment, now transformed into a prestigious dwelling, continues to celebrate its historical legacy while offering modern spaces. Text description by the architects.
