Michoacán 49

Mexico City, Mexico | 2022
[DONIS]

Michoacán 49 apartments building is an architectural abstraction of fractals. The tree branches in front of the site inform an intricate yet sequential arrangement of oblique terraces and openings. Space and light are cut by a series of broken walls, all built in reddish exposed concrete, material providing a geological aspect to the project and highlighting its relationship to fractal nature.

Rather than a “machine for living”, Michoacán 49 frames architecture as “art for living”, considering the city as a large fractal museum with architectural interventions. It becomes therein a new type of emotional experience amidst nature and architecture, movement and stasis.

Michoacán 49 has six levels: Ground floor includes lobby with bench and plants, exterior garden, service areas as well as parking, separated from the lobby by a cantilevered wall. An octagonal stair with varied windows transform this utilitarian space to a light experience. First and second levels allocate 100 m2 apartments with living and dining areas, open kitchen, service room and a large bedroom with walk-in closet and bathroom.  The upper levels are part of a penthouse: lower level includes social and service areas and the upper level a large bedroom with large bathroom and private living room and studio.

The top level allocates a common roof garden for social events with a pergola. Text description by the architects.
